This eye-catching pillow is made using Coats Phoomph for Fabric, for a fast and easy appliqué. Isn't it amazing how one pillow can make such a statement?
If you are familiar with quilt patterns you might recognize the traditional oak leaf design used on this pillow. By using bold black and white fabrics, the pillow has an updated and modern look.
Imagine the possibilities! For a teen girls room use bright, contrasting colors like hot pink and lime green, or for a more sophisticated style combine seaside colors; soft tan with shell pink or sky blue. I think this pillow would be perfect for a cabin or rustic-style decor made with a palette of rust, aubergine, olive green and yellow ochre.

Here is what you will need to make the black and white pillow shown:
1/2 yard of medium to heavy weight white fabric (I used a cotton duck)
One 18 inch invisible zipper (white)
One piece of black wool felt cut 6 inches x 12 inches
One sheet of phoomph, soft (black or white)
One 16 inch pillow form
1. On a piece of paper, draw a 6" square. I added 1 inch grid lines. Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner. Sketch the shape of the oak leaf pattern in pencil and then when you are happy with the shape make a final line in marker. Cut out the paper pattern.
3. Mark two squares 6 inches x 6 inches on one side of the Phoomph sheet. Cut away the extra Phoomph and save it for another project. Draw the oak leaf design on the two 6 inch squares using the pattern.
4. Peel the paper off the back side of the phoomph sheet and smooth the black felt over the sticky surface. Trim away any excess, making the edges even with the phoomph.
5. Cut along the lines, creating 8 individual pieces.
6. Cut the white fabric for the pillow front and back 16 inches x 16 inches. Arrange the felt pieces in the center, creating a mirror image design.
7. When you have the design in place, pick up the pieces and peel away the paper from the back side and stick in place.
8. Sew an invisible zipper into the bottom, joining the front and back pieces of the pillow.
Tip: Purchase a zipper that is a few inches longer than needed. It is much easier to sew because you can move the zipper pull out of the way. After the zipper is finished, pin the edges face to face and sew around the other three sides.
9. Turn the pillow right sides out and stuff with the pillow form and zip closed.
The finished pillow looks fabulous against a red wall!
