This pillow features an inset flange, which is placed on the front of the pillow, instead of being sewn in the seam on the outside edges. This method can be used for both knife-edge and boxed pillows. The center pleat adds a beautiful detail, but it’s also a workroom secret… the fullness added to the flange for the pleat makes it easier to create perfect corners!

The pillow only has welt cord on the front, but you might want to add welt cord to the outer edges as well. In fact, there are a lot of ways you can alter this design!
The knife edge pillow below is made with a small 1-inch flange. This has a better scale for a lumbar pillow size. You can see how the flange looks from the front and back.
The pillow below has a flange with more pleating, or you could make a flange without any pleats.
I think this idea would look stunning on a round boxed pillow, too. I guess I have another sample to try!
One of the steps to completing this pillow is to use a stitch-in-the-ditch foot on the industrial sewing machine. You can see a short video below of how to use the stitch-in-the-ditch foot.
